Ustaad Bhagat Singh Needs Big Booking Spike Before Premiere
The early trend of advance bookings in the US for Ustaad Bhagat Singh, starring Pawan Kalyan, has started to raise concerns within trade circles. With just four days remaining for the premiere shows, advance sales are currently progressing at a slower pace than expected for a film headlined by a star of Pawan Kalyan’s stature.
According to the latest available data, the USA premiere advance sales have reached approximately $183,000, with nearly 8,000 tickets sold as of Sunday morning. When the rest of the North American market is included, the total premiere advance bookings have touched around $200,000. While these numbers are not disappointing in absolute terms, they are considered relatively underwhelming for a big-ticket Telugu release featuring a major star, especially with only a few days left before the premieres.
Trade analysts believe the film will need a significant spike in bookings over the next few days to build the required momentum heading into release.
Meanwhile, the film has already wrapped up its theatrical business worldwide. The pre-release business of Ustaad Bhagat Singh is estimated at around ₹140 crore distributor share including GST, or roughly ₹120 crore excluding GST. To recover this investment and emerge as a box-office success, the film is expected to collect close to ₹225 crore gross worldwide—a target that is achievable but not necessarily easy under the current circumstances.
Trade reports suggest that the Nizam territory alone has been sold for nearly ₹50 crore, while the Andhra region has been valued at around ₹54 crore (with a ₹60 crore ratio). The Ceded region stands at approximately ₹16 crore, and overseas rights have reportedly been sold for about ₹12 crore.
Interestingly, several recent films of Pawan Kalyan have entered the market with high pre-release valuations but faced challenges in comfortably crossing their break-even targets. This includes the much-discussed OG. Trade data highlights the scale of business for his recent films: OG at around ₹170 crore, Hari Hara Veera Mallu at ₹126 crore, BRO at ₹100 crore, Bheemla Nayak at ₹108 crore, Vakeel Saab at ₹90 crore, Agnyaathavaasi at roughly ₹125 crore, and Katamarayudu at around ₹85 crore.
Adding to the challenge, Ustaad Bhagat Singh is also facing stiff competition from the highly anticipated Dhurandhar 2, which is reportedly dominating advance booking trends across several markets, including the crucial Nizam region.
Given this scenario, Ustaad Bhagat Singh may need exceptionally strong word of mouth and powerful opening-day numbers worldwide to comfortably reach its break-even mark and emerge as a profitable venture at the box office.
