Veteran Director K. Bhagyaraj Passes Away at 73
Chennai, June 27: The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of legendary filmmaker, actor, writer, and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj, who passed away on Saturday following a cardiac arrest in Chennai. He was 73. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves across the Tamil film fraternity, with actors, directors, technicians, and fans paying heartfelt tributes to one of Indian cinema’s finest storytellers.
Bhagyaraj reportedly complained of chest pain in the early hours of Saturday and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. He is survived by his wife, actress Poornima Bhagyaraj, son and actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.
A Master of Screenwriting
Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj on January 7, 1953, in Erode, Tamil Nadu, Bhagyaraj began his cinematic journey as an assistant director under legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja. His exceptional understanding of storytelling soon earned him recognition, and he went on to establish himself as one of the most influential writer-directors in Indian cinema.
Fondly referred to as the “King of Screenplay,” Bhagyaraj was celebrated for crafting intelligent, emotionally engaging, and family-oriented stories filled with humour, romance, and social relevance. His screenplay techniques continue to be studied and admired by aspiring filmmakers across the country.
A Remarkable Film Career
Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with Suvar Illatha Chiththirangal (1979) and delivered several blockbuster films including Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhanai Mudichu, Indru Poi Naalai Vaa, Darling Darling Darling, Chinna Veedu, Sundara Kandam, and Enga Chinna Rasa. Many of his films were remade in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada, expanding his influence beyond Tamil cinema.
Apart from directing, Bhagyaraj acted in more than 75 films and directed over 25 movies during a career spanning nearly five decades. His work in Hindi cinema, particularly Aakhree Raasta starring Amitabh Bachchan, further showcased his storytelling brilliance.

Bhagyaraj was more than just a filmmaker. He was also a screenwriter, producer, editor, lyricist, novelist, and magazine editor.
