Supreme Court Relief For Tollywood Over Ticket Price Rule
The Telugu film industry has received a major relief following a recent order from the Supreme Court of India regarding ticket pricing regulations. The decision comes at a time when producers and distributors have been expressing concerns over new rules that were making film releases more complicated.
Earlier, the Telangana High Court had directed producers to apply for ticket price hikes and related approvals at least 90 days before a film’s release. However, several filmmakers argued that the rule was impractical for the dynamic nature of the film industry.
Film release schedules often change due to production delays, marketing strategies, and competition from other releases. In many cases, producers finalize release dates only a few weeks before the film actually hits theatres, making it difficult to comply with a fixed three-month application window.
Raising this concern, leading production house Mythri Movie Makers approached the Supreme Court. The petition gained urgency as the banner is preparing to release its highly anticipated film Ustaad Bhagat Singh.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the practicality of the Telangana High Court’s directive. The bench observed that expecting producers to submit ticket price requests 90 days in advance may not align with the realities of the film industry. The judges also pointed out that many films finalize their release dates only days before the launch.
Additionally, the court noted that certain procedural aspects may not have been fully considered before issuing the directive.
Following the arguments, the Supreme Court issued a stay on the Telangana High Court’s order. As a result, the rule requiring producers to seek ticket price approvals three months prior to release will not be enforced for now.
With this stay in place, filmmakers can apply for ticket price revisions and related permissions without being bound by the strict 90-day timeline. Industry observers believe this development brings significant temporary relief to Tollywood producers and distributors, allowing them greater flexibility in planning film releases.
