‘Razakar’ Triumphs at the Dadasaheb Phalke Film Festival 2025
The critically acclaimed Telugu film Razakar has made a strong impact at the 15th Dadasaheb Phalke Film Festival – 2025, bagging prestigious awards for Best Debut Director and Best Cinematographer. Recognized as one of India’s premier non-governmental, non-profit, and non-commercial film festivals since 2011, the event celebrates innovative, thought-provoking, and progressive cinema every year on April 30. It honors the legacy of the legendary Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, the Father of Indian Cinema.
Historical Context Behind ‘Razakar’
Set against the backdrop of post-independence India, Razakar delves into the tumultuous period following 1947 when the princely state of Hyderabad, ruled by Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, resisted integration into the Indian Union. While most princely states joined India, the Nizam sought sovereignty under the name “Turkistan” and formed a private militia, the Razakars, led by Qasim Razvi. This militia was infamous for violent religious conversions and aggressive resistance.
In response, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel launched Operation Polo, leading to Hyderabad’s official merger with India on September 17, 1948. The film Razakar portrays these historical events with emotional depth and authenticity, aimed at educating the younger generation about a vital yet lesser-known chapter in Indian history.
