“Prabhas Shines for 40 Minutes, Vishnu Masterminded Every Detail in Kannappa”: Actor Shiva Balaji Opens Up

With Kannappa, Vishnu Manchu is all set to unveil his most ambitious project yet. Ahead of the film’s release, actor Shiva Balaji, who plays a pivotal role as Kumaradeva Sastry, sat down for an exclusive interview, sharing behind-the-scenes stories, cast dynamics, and his thoughts on the epic saga.

Q: How did your journey with Kannappa begin?
It happened quite organically. One day, I was having lunch with Mohan Babu garu and Vishnu at the office. The New Zealand schedule was already locked, and most of the cast was finalized. Mohan Babu garu suddenly asked Vishnu, “Why doesn’t Shiva Balaji have a role?” Vishnu responded that there wasn’t a suitable part for me. But Mohan Babu garu insisted.

The next day, he told me, “You’re playing my son—Kumaradeva Sastry. I’m Mahadeva Sastry.” That’s how I landed the role.

Q: What kind of preparation did the role demand?
Rather than relying on external references, I mirrored Mohan Babu garu’s demeanor. His character is very rigid, even rejecting physical affection from his own son. I carried that energy into my portrayal—it’s a silent but powerful emotional thread running through my role.

Q: Tell us more about your character.
It’s a well-defined supporting role with real depth. The story has multiple factions—Thinnadu, the Sastry lineage, and the Boya tribe. My character doesn’t have access to the sacred Vayu Lingam, unlike my father. I had significant scenes with Mohan Babu garu, and I loved how it was all written.

Q: You’ve been selective with roles lately. Why?
I’ve become very particular. If a story doesn’t connect with me, I let it go. I’m only looking for roles with strong scope for performance now.

Q: Have you seen Kannappa? What did you think?
Yes, I watched it. It’s a phenomenal film. The second half, especially, is visually and emotionally gripping. It’s much more than just a movie—it’s a spiritual journey.

Q: Prabhas plays a key part. What can audiences expect from him?
Prabhas has around 40 minutes of screen time. From his entry to the climax, his presence is magnetic. Vishnu gave him a meaty, impactful role that will leave a lasting impression.

Q: How do the other major stars fit in?
Every major character adds weight to the narrative. Mohanlal’s entry shifts the tone dramatically. Then Prabhas picks up the pace again. Akshay Kumar as Lord Shiva is divine—his dialogues are simple, powerful, and memorable.

Q: Devotional films are trending. How is Kannappa different?
Kannappa offers more than just entertainment—it delivers spiritual high points and several goosebump moments. It’s a film that stirs your soul.

Q: What was Mohan Babu garu like off-screen?
Warm and affectionate. He treats the team like family. I actually got closer to Vishnu during the MAA elections. We bonded during that time.

Q: Did you hesitate before signing the film?
Yes. I took two days to decide. I even asked Vishnu if it would feel like I was being forced in. He said it was my call, but he also promised me a better role in his next. I spoke to my wife, Madhu, and ultimately went with my gut. I’m so glad I did.

Q: Did you help in production too?
Yes! I was involved in arranging the food and even brought a chef. I supported wherever I could.

Q: There were rumors about Mohan Babu buying 7000 acres in New Zealand. What’s the truth?
(Laughs) That was just a running joke. We leased around 7000 acres for the shoot. One night while cooking, Mohan Babu garu joked that he owned it. Later, he clarified that it was leased land.

Q: Are you open to OTT content?
Definitely. I did Recce and enjoyed the experience. I’m planning to return with Recce 2 very soon.

Q: Thoughts on the current Bigg Boss format?
It feels too scripted now. During my season, it was more raw and real. I stayed in the house for three months, and that created a genuine fan base.

Q: How was it working with director Mukesh Kumar Singh?
He’s one of the calmest, most focused directors I’ve worked with. He loves history, travel, and vegetarian food. His collaboration with Vishnu really clicked.

Q: Your bond with Vishnu seems special.
Absolutely. Vishnu has a playful image on social media, but in reality, he’s grounded and meticulous. In Kannappa, he oversaw every detail—from production to performance—with complete dedication.

Q: Your take on the influence of social media influencers?
Some of it is harmful. Negativity spreads faster now and impacts everyone—not just celebrities, but even regular people.

Q: There were reports of controversial scenes. What’s the truth?
There was nothing offensive, but out of respect for public sentiment, we removed a few dialogues.

Q: How was Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of Lord Shiva?
He fit the role perfectly. Initially, Prabhas was considered, but eventually, Akshay stepped in and embodied the divine aura beautifully.

Q: What’s next for Shiva Balaji?
I’m working on a thriller produced by Mohan Babu garu. A Tamil director is helming it. More updates soon.
