Peddi Faces Fresh Controversy Over Tribal Representation

Peddi Faces Fresh Controversy Over Tribal Representation

Despite continuing its strong run at the box office, Ram Charan’s Peddi remains embroiled in controversy. Just when the debate surrounding Janhvi Kapoor’s character appeared to be subsiding, the film has found itself at the center of another storm, this time involving several tribal organizations.

Soon after the film’s release, sections of the audience and women’s groups expressed concern over the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyamma. Critics alleged that the character was unnecessarily sexualized in certain scenes, sparking widespread discussions on social media. As the criticism intensified, director Buchi Babu Sana addressed the issue, apologizing to those who felt offended and reportedly making modifications to some scenes in the theatrical version.

However, a fresh controversy has now emerged. Several Adivasi organizations have alleged that Peddi contains dialogues, character references, and terminology that they consider disrespectful and derogatory toward tribal communities. According to the groups, certain depictions in the film misrepresent tribal culture and reinforce harmful stereotypes about Adivasi people.

The organizations have reportedly submitted formal complaints to the District Collector and Superintendent of Police in Vizianagaram, seeking action against those responsible. They claim the film includes multiple references that insult tribal communities and have questioned how such content received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

A particular scene from the film has also drawn attention during the ongoing debate. In the sequence, Ram Charan’s character forcefully kisses Janhvi Kapoor’s character without her consent. Later, the character reportedly attempts to justify his behavior by stating that, being uneducated and from a tribal background, he expresses love through physical affection rather than conventional gestures such as letters or gifts.

While tribal organizations have not publicly detailed every objection, some observers believe scenes and dialogues of this nature may have contributed to the backlash, as they can be interpreted as associating problematic behavior with tribal identity and culture.

The controversy has now escalated, with tribal representatives reportedly demanding that authorities examine whether provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act are applicable if the content is found to be insulting toward tribal communities.

As of now, the makers of Peddi have not issued an official response to the latest allegations. With the film continuing to perform strongly in theatres, all eyes are on how the team will address the growing concerns raised by tribal groups.
