Actress Mrunal Thakur is once again under the spotlight, facing a wave of social media criticism following the promotions of her upcoming Hindi film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The film, which also stars Varun Dhawan and Pooja Hegde, presents Mrunal in a highly glamorous, commercial avatar—one that some viewers feel leans heavily into objectification for mass appeal.
A significant portion of the backlash is coming from Telugu audiences, who have closely followed her career trajectory in the industry. During the promotions of Dacoit, Mrunal had openly stated that she is being extremely selective with her Telugu projects, prioritizing meaningful roles over big banners or monetary gains. She emphasized that performances like Seetha Maha Lakshmi in Sita Ramam and Yashna in Hi Nanna helped her establish a certain standard—one she intends to uphold.
Now, that very statement is being questioned. Critics argue that if she is committed to strong, content-driven roles, the same principle should reflect in her Bollywood choices as well. The tone and presentation of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai appear to contradict the image she spoke about, leading to accusations of inconsistency.
However, not everyone agrees with the criticism. A section of audiences and industry observers have come out in her support, pointing out that actors should not be boxed into a single image.
