Mrunal Thakur’s Glam Role Sparks Double Standards Debate

Mrunal Thakur’s Glam Role Sparks “Double Standards” Debate

Actress Mrunal Thakur is once again under the spotlight, facing a wave of social media criticism following the promotions of her upcoming Hindi film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The film, which also stars Varun Dhawan and Pooja Hegde, presents Mrunal in a highly glamorous, commercial avatar—one that some viewers feel leans heavily into objectification for mass appeal.

A significant portion of the backlash is coming from Telugu audiences, who have closely followed her career trajectory in the industry. During the promotions of Dacoit, Mrunal had openly stated that she is being extremely selective with her Telugu projects, prioritizing meaningful roles over big banners or monetary gains. She emphasized that performances like Seetha Maha Lakshmi in Sita Ramam and Yashna in Hi Nanna helped her establish a certain standard—one she intends to uphold.

Now, that very statement is being questioned. Critics argue that if she is committed to strong, content-driven roles, the same principle should reflect in her Bollywood choices as well. The tone and presentation of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai appear to contradict the image she spoke about, leading to accusations of inconsistency.

However, not everyone agrees with the criticism. A section of audiences and industry observers have come out in her support, pointing out that actors should not be boxed into a single image. They argue that working across industries naturally involves adapting to different storytelling styles—balancing performance-oriented roles with mainstream commercial entertainers.

In Telugu cinema, Mrunal built a reputation for portraying emotionally rich and graceful characters, earning both critical acclaim and audience admiration. Some filmmakers even drew comparisons between her acting style and legendary actresses like Savitri and Soundarya. In contrast, her Bollywood journey has seen her take on more experimental and bold roles, including projects like Lust Stories 2, which surprised many viewers.

At the heart of the debate lies a simple question: are these “high standards” exclusive to her Telugu film choices, or is she strategically selecting roles based on the dynamics of each industry?

Ultimately, taking on glamorous roles is not inherently problematic. But when an actor publicly commits to maintaining certain benchmarks, audiences tend to expect consistency across the board. That gap between expectation and execution is what’s currently fueling the backlash.

Despite the ongoing debate, Mrunal recently impressed with her performance in Dacoit, even though the film itself received mixed reactions. Whether this phase strengthens her versatility or raises further questions will largely depend on the choices she makes going forward.
