A Grand Project
Music director GV Prakash Kumar recently shared his thoughts on composing the soundtrack for the highly anticipated period action film Thangalaan. The film, starring Chiyaan Vikram and produced by director Pa Ranjith alongside KE Gnanavelraja under the Studio Green Films banner, is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Kolar Gold Fields. Scheduled for a grand release on August 15, coinciding with Independence Day, the movie has already generated significant buzz.
Crafting an Authentic Sound
In an interview, Prakash Kumar reflected on his experience working on the film. The scale of the film is grand, almost like Indiana Jones. After reading the script, I knew we needed a soundtrack that matched its epic and historical setting,” he said. To create an authentic sound, he explored the music of tribal communities from Australia and Africa, aiming to craft a score that fit the film’s pre-independence tribal theme.
Overcoming Challenges
Prakash Kumar spent 50 days re-recording the music, sometimes working ahead of schedule to meet tight deadlines. “The limited timeframe was a challenge, but with the support of my team, we managed to deliver something we’re proud of. Director Pa Ranjith’s vision for the film guided me, and it was very satisfying to align the music with his creative direction,” he explained.
Positive Reception
The film’s title track “Thangalaan” and the song “Manaki Manaki” have already been well received, with many viewers praising them on digital platforms. The songs and BGM play important role in carrying scene’s impact. The story covers various emotions—love, conspiracy, conflict, and anger—and I aimed to amplify these through the BGM,” Prakash Kumar noted.
A Unique Experience
He also spoke highly of director Pa Ranjith’s work, describing the screenplay as a fresh take on magical realism. While realism is shown in other movies. Thangalaan has something new. Working with Pa Ranjith was a fantastic experience,” he said.
Impressive Performances
Prakash Kumar was also impressed by Vikram’s physical transformation for the film and praised the performances of Parvathy Thiruvothu and Malavika Mohanan. Vikram gave stellar performance. Other cast also followed the same ratio.
Looking Forward
Looking forward, Prakash Kumar is excited for audiences to experience Thangalaan on the big screen. I’m sure that people will enjoy the film and its music.
Balancing Technology and Tradition
He also shared his views on the role of technology in music production, stressing the importance of finding a balance. New technologies including AI offer many possibilities, it’s important to use them without depending on them.
Upcoming Projects
In addition to Thangalaan, Prakash Kumar is busy with several other projects, including Lucky Baskhar starring Dulquer Salman, Robin Hood with Nithiin, and collaborations with Dil Raju and Sivakarthikeyan. He’s also working on a Tamil film directed by Dhanush and other exciting ventures. Despite his packed schedule as both an actor and music director, Prakash Kumar has carefully planned his commitments to ensure everything runs smoothly.
