Jana Nayagan Faces Fresh Legal Hurdle: Madras High Court Sets Aside CBFC Certification Order
Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan has hit yet another roadblock, adding to the prolonged uncertainty surrounding its theatrical release.
The film’s release was initially delayed due to pending censor formalities. Now, in a significant legal development, the Madras High Court Chief Justice’s Bench, on January 27, set aside an earlier order passed by a single judge that had directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant the film a U/A certificate.
The Chief Justice’s Bench ruled that the single judge should have provided the CBFC adequate time to file a counter affidavit before issuing the directive. As a result, the matter has been remanded back to the single judge for a fresh hearing. The court also clarified that the film’s producer is permitted to amend the prayer in the writ petition, ensuring procedural fairness.
While the order addresses legal technicalities, it has also raised concerns about further delays. Legal experts suggest that the case could once again move to a Division Bench, and if challenged further, may even reach the Supreme Court, potentially pushing the film’s release by several months.
However, there is still a ray of hope for the makers. An immediate appeal to the Supreme Court seeking reinstatement of the single judge’s earlier order could pave the way for a quicker resolution and an early release.
The controversy stems from objections raised by the CBFC, which had referred Jana Nayagan to a revising committee before issuing certification. Amid the ongoing censor dispute, Vijay has publicly reaffirmed his commitment to integrity and ethical filmmaking, winning praise from fans.
With this unfavourable ruling from the Madras High Court, all eyes are now on the next legal move. Fans are eagerly awaiting clarity on when Jana Nayagan will finally hit the big screens.
