Ilaiyaraaja Wins Legal Battle Against Good Bad Ugly!
Telugu production house Mythri Movie Makers, who recently ventured into Tamil cinema with star hero Ajith Kumar’s film Good Bad Ugly, faced several hurdles during the making of the project. Industry circles still believe that if it were any other actor or production house, the film might never have seen the light of day. Thanks to Ajith’s support and Mythri’s determination, the film was eventually completed and released.
But controversies didn’t end there. Since its release, Good Bad Ugly has been surrounded by disputes—especially regarding its music. The major issue arose when several old songs composed by legendary maestro Ilaiyaraaja were used in the film.
Ilaiyaraaja vs Mythri Movie Makers
The film, released theatrically on April 10, started streaming on Netflix from May 8 after completing its theatrical run. However, Ilaiyaraaja strongly objected to the unauthorized use of his songs in the movie. He openly criticized the makers and warned that he would pursue action under copyright law. Reports suggested that Ilaiyaraaja demanded ₹5 crores as compensation to settle the issue out of court, though neither party confirmed this officially.
With the matter escalating, Ilaiyaraaja filed a petition in the Madras High Court. After lengthy hearings, the court issued an order banning the screening and streaming of the film on any platform until the dispute is resolved.
Netflix Pulls Down the Film
Even though Mythri Movie Makers claimed in court that they had secured permissions for the songs, they failed to provide proper documentation. This opened the possibility of the court ordering the removal of the disputed songs altogether.
Following the court’s directions, Netflix immediately stopped streaming Good Bad Ugly. Now, when viewers search for the film, they are greeted with the message: “This title is not available in your country.” Social media is buzzing with this development, and industry experts say the setback is a major blow to Mythri Movie Makers. The production house’s OTT deal with Netflix is also likely to run into trouble due to this controversy.
Ilaiyaraaja’s Strong Stand on Copyright
This is not the first time Ilaiyaraaja has fought legal battles over copyright—he has won similar cases in the past. Supporters argue that since he is the creator of the music, he alone has full rights over its usage, and filmmakers must obtain his permission. Critics, however, feel that the legendary composer is being too rigid, suggesting that such disputes should be handled more amicably within the industry.
Regardless of differing opinions, one thing is clear—Ilaiyaraaja is extremely serious when it comes to protecting his intellectual property. Given his history of legal interventions, many believe Mythri Movie Makers might continue to face challenges in this regard.
