‘Thandel’ is the biggest movie of my career- Naga Chaitanya
‘Thandel’ will give audiences a fresh emotional high and will definitely create magic: Yuva Samrat Akkineni Naga Chaitanya
Yuva Samrat Akkineni Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi’s highly anticipated movie Thandel is set for a grand worldwide release on February 7. Directed by Chandoo Mondeti and produced by passionate producer Bunny Vasu under the Geetha Arts banner, presented by mega producer Allu Aravind, the film has already created a huge buzz with its promotional content. On this occasion, hero Akkineni Naga Chaitanya shared insights about Thandel in a press meet.
There are high expectations for ‘Thandel’. How excited are you?
This is the biggest production and high-budget movie of my career. The film has a large-scale story and character. I am very excited. We have already watched the film and feel very confident. The second half, in particular, received unanimous praise. It gave me an emotional high as well. The last 30 minutes are very satisfying, and the climax delivers a great emotional high.
How did the story of ‘Thandel’ come to you?
I first heard this story during Dhootha. I learned that Vasu garu had held the story at Geetha Arts. I asked them to develop it into a safer, stronger narrative. Initially, when I heard it, it felt like a documentary. We had to work on adapting it into a cinematic language. After that process, it turned out brilliantly.
How was your experience visiting Srikakulam and meeting the locals?
The story was first introduced as an idea. To transform into the character, I had to understand their lifestyle. That’s why we directly met them and did our homework. Once I was convinced that I could do it, the journey began.
Bunny Vasu said you put your heart into this film, and he believes you will reach the next level as an actor. What’s your take?
Every actor aims to improve with each film. Since this story is based on a real-life character, I felt even more motivated. This film gave me the opportunity to take the next step as an actor. I spent almost eight months focusing on the script and my transformation. I even took tuition to learn the Srikakulam dialect, which was quite challenging.
Why did you choose the character of Raju?
I always wanted to do a film based on real-life stories, and this one was about our Telugu people. It truly inspired me. I love working on rooted stories.
How was working with director Chandoo Mondeti?
This is my third film with Chandoo. I love working with him because he constantly thinks about how to present me in a fresh way. He worked hard to bring a commercial appeal to this film.
How significant is the love story in ‘Thandel’?
Thandel is an out-and-out love story, with additional layers beyond just romance.
What does ‘Thandel’ mean?
People from Srikakulam travel to Gujarat, lease boats for fishing, sell their catch there, and return home. ‘Thandel’ means ‘leader’ in Gujarati. We shot most of the film at sea, and filming in real locations added to the performance. The jail episodes are very emotional.
You are working with Geetha Arts again. Will the magic of ‘100% Love’ repeat?
Definitely. I believe this will be a great milestone in my career. I always wanted to do another film with Geetha Arts because they ensure a strong release for actors, and their production quality is excellent. The fact that this story was with Geetha Arts made it a double bonanza for me.
How was your experience working with Sai Pallavi?
Pallavi is a fantastic actress. I love acting with her. She has great positive energy and deeply understands her character. When an artist is that dedicated, it enhances my performance too.
How do you feel about Devi Sri Prasad’s music?
The Bujjithalli song took the film to a grassroots level. All the songs have become super hits. Working with DSP is always a joy—every film I’ve done with him has had a hit soundtrack.

How challenging was it to do a survival drama along with a love story?
It was very challenging. The film has a love story along with mass elements. It’s very inspiring. Every honest love story has pain, and we have presented that pain beautifully. The emotional high in this film feels very fresh. As an actor, this film has given me immense satisfaction.
What was Aamir Khan’s reaction?
Aamir sir loved the trailer. Even though his son’s film is releasing on the same day, he liked our trailer so much that he attended our event. Karthi garu also came because he was impressed by the content.
How was the visual experience with cinematographer Shamdat?
He provided beautiful visuals. After watching Virupaksha, I wanted to work with him. Luckily, it happened, and I would love to work with the same team for my next film.
Tell us about the ‘Shivuni’ song.
Dancing with Sai Pallavi is challenging! (laughs) But we enjoyed it a lot. The song is based on the love story of Shiva and Parvati. Our characters in the film are also inspired by Shiva and Parvati, which is why this song follows that theme.
Real-life-based films often receive awards. What are your expectations for this movie?
I haven’t thought about awards yet. However, Aravind sir said he would send it for the National Awards after release. My main priority is entertaining the audience. I have a great bond with Aravind garu, and I’ve been traveling with him and Vasu for a long time.
What memories has ‘Thandel’ given you?
Meeting real-life characters was very emotional. I spent a lot of time with them and saw a genuine honesty in them. When there’s honesty, anything can be achieved. Many things happened during the shoot. Once, our boat collapsed. When we went to Kerala, the coast guard arrested our cameramen. A lot of incidents took place.
Tell us about Raju’s character.
Raju is a fighter. When he was in jail, he endured pain and fought for his people. His love story is his strength, and it is shown beautifully in the film.
