After the massive success of Sankranthiki Vasthunnam, Sri Venkateswara Creations is gearing up for another promising release — Thammudu, starring Nithiin. Directed by Sriram Venu and produced by Dil Raju and Shirish, the film also features Varsha Bollamma, Sapthami Gowda, and marks the return of popular actress Laya to Telugu cinema. The film is set for a grand worldwide release on July 4.
Speaking about her comeback, Laya shared,
“Thammudu is the perfect film for my re-entry. It has soul, strong emotions, and a unique take on sibling bonding. I play Jhansi Kiranmayee — a sincere, no-nonsense officer who also has deep love for her family, especially her brother, played by Nithiin.”
From the US to a Powerful Role in India
Laya revealed that the journey began in February 2023, when she returned to India and gave a few interviews to YouTube channels.
“The team approached me after seeing those interviews. Initially, they weren’t convinced I fit the role physically, but after a new photoshoot and some weight gain — thanks to a lot of sweets! — I was selected.” She stayed in India for several months to shoot for the film, dedicating herself fully to the role.
Grit and Grace in the Forest
“We shot extensively in forests. Contrary to the common perception that film shoots are like picnics, this was physically demanding. Someone was getting injured every day — even walking barefoot on rocks for some scenes. Despite that, there was complete commitment from the entire team.”
Working With Nithiin and Director Sriram Venu
“Nithiin may be a star, but on set, he was like a kid — cheerful and grounded. His performance in Thammudu will surprise many. Director Sriram Venu was meticulous and demanding in the best way possible. His clarity and conviction really inspired all of us.”
Then and Now: Industry Evolution
“Back then, promotions were simpler — audio launches, theatre visits. Now it’s a whole different game with massive events and viral moments. Even as a heroine, I kept things simple. I was always seen as the girl-next-door. That’s why doing character roles now feels natural to me.”
Leaving a Stable Job for a Strong Character
“Opportunities like this don’t knock twice. Jhansi Kiranmayee is a woman of few words, but her presence is impactful. She’s fearless, driven, and emotional — a beautiful balance I was thrilled to portray.”
A Role That Stands Out
“I’ve mostly played soft, simple characters. But this is different — it’s powerful and memorable. Every character in Thammudu has a purpose, and the sibling emotion is portrayed in a refreshingly real and heartfelt way.”
Plans Ahead
“This comeback is intentional. I’m open to all meaningful roles — mother, sister, anything — as long as they’re substantial. Even when I was a lead actress, I played mother roles at 22! I just want audiences to remember my character when they leave the theatre. I’m not a visiting artist from the US — I’m from Hyderabad. I’m currently shooting a film with Shivaji and will stay here if more good scripts come my way.”
