Thaman’s Vision: Building a World-Class Music School and Redefining Film Music
Q: How do you efficiently manage multiple projects at once?
Film music has evolved, offering diverse stories and fresh concepts. This change allows me to create unique compositions. I’m thoroughly enjoying the current phase, with projects like Telusu Kada, OG, Game Changer, and Daku Maharaj, each distinct in its musical needs. For example, Daku Maharaj will feature just three songs, while Game Changer includes seven tracks. Director Shankar’s return to commercial cinema after a long break promises a family-friendly film with moments of action and emotion.
Q: What precautions do you take when composing background scores?
Emotion is at the core of effective background music. Without it, even the best composition falls flat. I always align my music with the story and director’s vision. For instance, I couldn’t replicate the sound of Akhanda for Bhagavanth Kesari. After Mani Sharma, I’m focused on setting a new trend in background scores. Some films require a focus on vocals, while others rely more on instrumental sounds. During Akhanda, it felt as if Lord Shiva himself guided me—creating a background score of that magnitude is something I may never replicate.
Q: How was your experience working on Pushpa 2?
Watching Pushpa 2 was an eye-opening experience; it’s extraordinary. After its release, awards will be chasing Allu Arjun (Bunny). Initially, I was given just 15 days to complete the score, which wasn’t feasible. So, I focused on finishing the first half within the time frame.
Q: Do you think there’s anything left for you to achieve?
I believe my real journey starts now. The industry is growing rapidly. While we once imported artists from other states or languages, now globally renowned talents are eager to act in our films. For OG, we are even in talks with Korean and Japanese artists. As the industry expands globally, I need to constantly evolve to meet international standards.
Q: Who inspires you in music?
My dream is to reach the level of A.R. Rahman. Director Shankar initially saw me as an actor, but it took years for him to recognize my potential as a music director. Working with Shankar was always my dream, although I initially felt I didn’t fit his style. During the lockdown, Shankar watched Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo multiple times. When Dil Raju mentioned Game Changer and suggested I meet Shankar, I was nervous. However, the album was completed in six months.
Q: What can we expect from the songs of Game Changer? How did Shankar work his magic?
On the 20th of this month, we will release a duet song from Game Changer, followed by the song Dope, which will also have an English version. The picturizations of the songs are mesmerizing—you’ll want to see them more than once. The six songs in Game Changer alone are worth the ticket price. Shankar filmed all the songs before the rest of the scenes were shot, ensuring the music was the centerpiece.
Q: When can we expect updates about The Raja Saab?
The Raja Saab will feature six songs, including a remix, perfectly suited for a commercial film. We plan to share updates starting in January.
Q: How do you respond to criticism?
In my earlier career, I faced criticism and was labeled a “copycat.” However, I no longer select routine projects, and I take pride in creating original work. While some might copy music carefully, my style is authentic, and I believe in the power of original creativity.
Q: When can we expect updates about OG?
I am cautious about sharing details on OG, as even small information often leads to “damage control.” We initially planned to release a song and poster on September 2, but the floods delayed everything. Updates will begin in January, with 80% of the shooting already completed. OG promises an unforgettable opening, setting a new standard in Indian cinema.
Q: On a personal note, what do your wife and children do?
My wife manages my accounts and handles all aspects of my music business. If I need money, I know where to go! My son is currently in his first year at IIT, and our family is slowly relocating to Hyderabad.
Q: How do you manage everything? How supportive is your team?
My first paycheck was just Rs 30, and back then, I was earning Rs.40,000 per day as a keyboard player—this was the highest rate in India at the time. That sense of accomplishment still drives me today. My 25-year-old team is my greatest strength; they are always with me and offer unwavering support.
Q: Are you composing for Allu Arjun and Trivikram’s next project?
Yes, I’m composing music for Allu Arjun and Trivikram’s next film. This project will take Trivikram’s career to the next level, as he’s crafting a completely new world for the film.
Q: It’s been a while since we’ve heard a complete love story album from you. Any updates?
Telusu Kada is a beautiful love story penned by Neeraja Kona, with strong support from Vishwaprasad of People Media Factory. The film features six amazing songs, and Siddhu is playing a fantastic role. After Tholi Prema, Telusu Kada will be another memorable love story album from me.
Q: What’s your life’s dream or ambition?
I dream of building a world-class music school to offer free music education to underprivileged individuals. Studies have shown that communities with strong music programs tend to have lower crime rates. I also enjoy playing cricket—it helps refresh my mind and sparks new musical ideas. Within the next two to three years, I plan to build a state-of-the-art studio and may approach the government for support, though I won’t ask for land.
Q: Will your son follow in your footsteps as a music director?
I’ve seen my son play the piano, and his music reflects his emotions. However, I don’t pressure him to follow my path. I believe he will learn and grow from his experiences, and when the time comes, he will return even stronger.
Q: Are you collaborating with Akira Nandan for OG?
For OG, I plan to include a song by Ramana Gogula. Akira Nandan is a talented pianist, and I’d love to involve him in the project. He worked with me for two months, and his long fingers make him a perfect fit for playing the piano.
