SSS Promises a Complete Theatrical Experience: Sudheer Sriram
After classic entertainers like Missamma, Adirindayya Chandram, and Tata Birla Madhyalo Laila, the popular pair Shivaji and Laya are coming together for the film Saampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani. Following the successes of Little Hearts and Raju Weds Rambayi, this film is being presented in association with ETV Win by noted producers Bunny Vasu and Vamsi Nandipati.
The recently released trailer has significantly raised expectations. Touted as a crime-comedy family thriller, the film is being produced under the Sri Shivaji Productions banner by hero Shivaji himself and directed by Sudheer Sriram. The movie is set for a worldwide release on the 6th of this month. On this occasion, director Sudheer Sriram interacted with the media. Here are the highlights:
What is your background?
I am from Kadapa. My father was a postmaster. I have loved films since childhood and always dreamed of gaining recognition like a film celebrity. After watching Happy Days, I completed my engineering. I’ve been in the film industry since 2015 and worked in the direction department for several films. I worked on Evaru, starring Adivi Sesh. The film’s director Venkat Ramji (Ramji) is my mentor and like a godfather to me. Because of him, I stand before you today as a director.
Why did you choose Shivaji garu as the hero?
When I saw Shivaji garu in 90s films, he reminded me of my father. While narrating stories, I felt I should approach him with this one. When I narrated Saampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani, he immediately said he would produce it himself. That made me extremely happy. He also suggested narrating it to the ETV team. Nithin garu and Sai Krishna garu approved it instantly, and finally Bapineedu garu also came on board. That’s how the journey of this film began. Thanks to Shivaji garu, we completed the film quickly.
What kind of story is this?
This is a crime comedy. It will have a style similar to films directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. Like Kolamaavu Kokila and Doctor, it blends dark comedy with a thrilling backdrop. The trailer clearly reflects this tone. I personally love dark comedy — it’s close to my style. It’s definitely a film the whole family can enjoy in theatres, offering both fun and emotion. After watching it, audiences will feel they’ve seen a complete entertainer.
Initially, it was planned for OTT release. Why shift to theatres?
We originally planned it for theatrical release, and the ETV team also agreed. However, after Little Hearts and Raju Weds Rambayi released in theatres, ETV Win felt they were missing out on exclusive original content and considered a direct OTT release. But unexpectedly, with a suggestion from Anil Ravipudi, we decided to bring it to theatres. I was worried I might miss the emotional moment of seeing my name on the big screen for my first film. Now I’m very happy it’s releasing in theatres.
How are the characters in the film?
Every character has been perfectly cast, each with a unique dimension. During shooting, everyone on set used to laugh while filming the scenes. After the first 20 minutes, the story takes a completely different turn.
Is Shivaji’s role similar to his 90s characters?
There is no connection at all. In this film, he plays a very energetic character. For me, on-screen Shivaji perfectly fit the role of Sriram. Even the film’s title was suggested by Shivaji garu. His involvement has added great value to the project.
How involved was Shivaji in the making?
He didn’t make any changes to the story. He delivered dialogues in his own style and was properly involved in the songs. The “Paya” song was done based on his suggestion. His advice was very valuable. The story you’ll see on screen is exactly what I narrated at the beginning. The script never changed.
What kind of theatrical experience will audiences have?
This is definitely a theatre-worthy film. Along with Anil Ravipudi garu, a few others have watched it. Everyone found the first half hilarious and thoroughly enjoyable, while the second half’s suspense gave them a thrilling experience. Whether in theatres or on OTT, the film will appeal to audiences. But I’m especially happy it’s releasing in theatres.
What kind of films do you want to direct personally?
I don’t want to limit myself to one genre. My next four stories are completely different — fantasy, science fiction, commercial entertainer, and even a mythological story. I don’t want to restrict myself to a single genre.
Is the film only about comedy? Does it have logic and story depth?
No one will say this film lacks story or logic after watching it. No scene will feel unnecessary. Every scene and every character has a logical purpose. From beginning to end, the film is perfectly structured. It’s a very carefully written script.
Final words about the film?
Audiences will definitely enjoy a hilarious first half. The second half shifts into crime and becomes thrilling. The film has all the elements required for a complete theatrical entertainer.
