Initially, senior filmmaker Sundar C was locked in to helm Thalaivar 173. The team was almost ready to go on floors when creative differences surfaced, leading Sundar C to exit the project. Now, that suspense seems to have ended. A young director’s name has suddenly emerged — someone who impressed both critics and audiences with a small film that became a big hit.
That director is none other than Ramkumar Balakrishnan, who recently received widespread acclaim for his film Parking. With a simple concept, gripping narrative, and thrilling execution, he won over viewers and critics alike. Industry insiders say that Rajinikanth was highly impressed by the story Ramkumar narrated, and the combination is almost locked.
The interesting twist?
The story Ramkumar pitched to Rajinikanth was originally written for actor Simbu. For various reasons, that project didn’t materialize. Now, after reworking and elevating the script to suit Rajinikanth’s larger-than-life image and superstardom, the director narrated it to Thalaivar — and Rajini is said to have been thoroughly impressed.
Imagining Rajinikanth in a story penned for Simbu gives a clear idea of the scale and transformation Ramkumar has brought to the script. With just one film’s experience, getting the chance to direct a legend like Rajinikanth is nothing short of a lifetime achievement for the young filmmaker.
The film will be produced by Kamal Haasan under Raaj Kamal Films International. According to buzz, the official announcement is expected on December 12, as a special birthday treat for Rajinikanth fans. Seeing the names of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together — even if Kamal is in the producer’s chair — will be a moment of pure excitement for fans.
