‘I’m Playing a Different Character in Sigma That I Haven’t Done Before’: Faria Abdullah
Actress Faria Abdullah is gearing up for the release of Sigma, an action-adventure heist comedy entertainer starring Sundeep Kishan in the lead. The film marks the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay and is produced by Subaskaran under the prestigious Lyca Productions banner.
The film has generated considerable buzz with its promotional content and is set to hit theatres worldwide on October 2. Mythri Movie Distributors Limited will release the film across Coastal Andhra and Telangana, while NVR Cinema will handle its release in the Ceded region.
Ahead of the release, Faria Abdullah interacted with the media and spoke about her character, working with Sundeep Kishan and debutant director Jason Sanjay, Thaman’s music, and her experience making her first Tamil film.
Tell us about your journey with Sigma.
Sigma is my first Tamil film, so I’m extremely happy to have made my Tamil debut with a prestigious production house like Lyca Productions. It is a fun-filled action-adventure heist comedy entertainer, and the film has brought together some wonderful technicians and actors.
I play a radio jockey in the film. What I really liked about the character is that it gave me the opportunity to explore a wide range of emotions. I got to portray different shades through this role, and that was a very exciting experience for me.
Most importantly, Sigma is a film that can be enjoyed by the entire family. I believe audiences can watch it together and have a great time.
After Mathu Vadalara, it looks like you are showing more interest in action-oriented films. Is that true?
Action suits my personality as well. (Laughs) I want to explore all kinds of films and characters. I definitely enjoy doing action films, and I would love to continue experimenting with different genres.
How was your chemistry with Sundeep Kishan?
I have known Sundeep for quite some time. We had always wanted to work together in a film, and finally, it happened with Sigma. Both of us have characters that are quite different and fresh in this film, so I think audiences will enjoy seeing our combination.
What was your first impression when Jason Sanjay narrated the story to you?
Jason narrated the story to me over a Zoom call. After listening to the entire narration, I actually asked him how old he was. When he told me he was 24, I found it very inspiring.
He is Vijay sir’s son, but he never makes you feel that way. He is extremely humble and friendly and easily connects with everyone around him.
Jason has a very good command over direction. Even though Sigma is his first film, he had tremendous clarity about his vision. The way he handled the set was also very calm and composed. He knew exactly what he wanted and executed it with confidence.
How has the response been to you in Tamil Nadu?
The love I have received in Tamil Nadu has been wonderful. Wherever I go, people show so much affection. Sundeep and Jason already have a lot of love and goodwill there, and I feel that their popularity has also helped me connect with the Tamil audience.
SS Rajamouli garu released the trailer. What feedback did he give you?
Rajamouli garu said that the trailer looked like a good commercial entertainer. He also mentioned that, considering the nature of the film, we must have had a lot of fun while making it.
And that is absolutely true. We genuinely had a lot of fun during the shoot. It was a very enjoyable experience.
I would also love to do Sigma 2. If audiences embrace this film really well, I hope there will be an opportunity to make a sequel. However, the story of the first film comes to a close here.
Since this is your first Tamil film, did you notice any differences between the Tamil and Telugu film industries?
At the end of the day, the film industry is pretty much the same everywhere. The only noticeable difference for me was the food habits. (Laughs)
I’m very happy that I got the opportunity to make my Tamil debut with a project like Sigma. It has been a great experience.
How would you describe Thaman’s music and background score?
Thaman sir’s background score is on another level. You can clearly feel his signature style throughout the film.
There is also a special Sigma-style song towards the end, and I had a lot of fun shooting for it. The songs reaching audiences well has definitely been an advantage for the film.
How do you feel about Mythri Movie Makers releasing the film?
I’m extremely happy about it. This is my second film with Mythri Movie Makers, so I already have a good association with them. It feels great to have them backing the film for its release.
Do you have any plans to direct a film someday?
I’m definitely interested in direction. I’ve been writing a few stories, but I think it will take some more time before I actually take the plunge.
If I ever direct a film, I would definitely want to act in it as well.
Have you received any new offers from Tamil cinema?
I have listened to a few scripts. I’ll take a decision about them after Sigma releases. I want to see how things progress and then decide on my next projects.
