Music Srinivasa Rao was one of the directors who introduced something new to the Indian film industry. He took many great pictures. Tamil film ‘Dikkatra Parvati’ is one of them. The film is based on the life story of the Great Rajaji. Released in 1974. It is sponsored by Film Finance Corporation. Now the film has achieved a rare feat. ‘Dikkatra Parvati’ will be screened exclusively on January 1 at 6 pm at the International Film Festival in Chennai.
‘Dikkatra Parvati’ has many specialties. The film was shot in Torapalle, Rajaji’s birthplace. Court room scenes were filmed at the court in Hosur with the permission of the High Court. Those scenes were starring real lawyers. Vani Jayaram sang a song written by Kannadasan and another song written by Rajaji. On the orders of the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MG Ramachandran … Government officials took the film negative to prepare 16mm copies for the alcohol ban. It is also the first neo-realistic film in Tamil.
The musician Srinivasa Rao recalled the background of the film being screened at the Chennai International Film Festival. “It was an unforgettable experience to get Rajaji Gari’s personal permission for this film. I was shocked to learn that the film was negatively damaged years after its release. Fortunately … a good print was found near the National Film Archives in Pune. ‘Dikkatra Parvati’ is one of them. I am very happy to have a digital copy of the film today.
