Q: What were your predictions for Kalki 2898 AD, and how did the film’s success align with your expectations?
Ashwini Dutt: I am extremely happy with the film’s success. From the very first show, the response from audiences across the Telugu states, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and globally has been overwhelming. It’s a resounding success that matched my high expectations. Hats off to Nag Ashwin for his brilliant execution. I am absolutely delighted.
Q: Nag Ashwin’s previous films were known for their nuanced storytelling. When did you feel confident that he could handle a subject with such complexity?
Ashwini Dutt: We have been with Nag Ashwin since his first film. From the beginning, I had faith in his ability to create something monumental. I’ve always told my daughters that he has the potential to direct any grand film. We discovered a director of immense talent in our own backyard (laughs). Since my first film, ‘Unrekaledi Manman,’ I’ve always supported the director’s vision without interference. With ‘Kalki 2898 AD,’ I continued this approach, providing everything Nag needed without question.
Q: How did you feel watching Amitabh Bachchan in such a unique role crafted by Nag Ashwin?
Ashwini Dutt: I trusted Nag Ashwin to capture the essence of Amitabh Bachchan’s character, and he did so brilliantly. Amitabh sir’s portrayal exceeded all expectations. Hats off to him for bringing such depth and gravitas to his role.
Q: What was your reaction when you, as a producer, bowed at Amitabh Bachchan’s feet on stage?
Ashwini Dutt: It was an impulsive moment of respect and admiration (laughs). We usually greet each other with mutual respect, but bowing on stage was unexpected. Amitabh Bachchan is a living legend, and that gesture was a small token of the immense respect I have for him.
Q: The concept of ‘Buzzy’ the car played a significant role in the film. How did you react to this idea?
Ashwini Dutt: ‘Buzzy’ was entirely Nag Ashwin’s vision. When he presented the concept to me, I was amazed. The way it was integrated into the film added a unique and memorable element to the story.
Q: Was there always a plan for a sequel when you conceived the story?
Ashwini Dutt: Yes, the idea of a sequel was always in the back of our minds. Once Kamal Haasan came on board, it solidified our decision to explore further parts of the story. Kamal’s character adds tremendous depth and potential for future narratives.
Q: Were there any significant challenges or tensions during the making of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’?
Ashwini Dutt: There were no major tensions. We initially planned for a mid-summer release, but due to post-production delays, we had to shift to June 27th. Despite the challenges, the film’s success surpassed our expectations. The dedication of Nag, Swapna, and Priyanka ensured everything fell into place.
Q: When can we expect part 2 to release?
Ashwini Dutt: As of now, we are looking at a potential release around this time next year. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re aiming for a timely release.
Q: Considering your past experiences with mythological subjects, were there any apprehensions in tackling a powerful narrative like ‘Kalki 2898 AD’?
Ashwini Dutt: None at all. Nag Ashwin presented the story in a fantastic way. I had complete faith in his vision and did not question the subject matter.
Q: Swapna mentioned that the film was made out of love. How do you feel about the records it’s breaking?
Ashwini Dutt: Records are meant to be broken, and we’re thrilled with the overwhelming response. The success is a testament to the combined efforts of Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Nag Ashwin. We are thoroughly enjoying this success.
Q: How was Prabhas’s cooperation throughout the project?
Ashwini Dutt: Prabhas was exceptional. His dedication and cooperation were crucial in bringing this film to life. Without his involvement, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ wouldn’t have achieved the same level of excellence. He truly acted like a darling.
Q: The Rajamouli-Prabhas episode and other cameos have been well-received. Can you tell us more about them?
Ashwini Dutt The Rajamouli-Prabhas episode added a humorous touch, which the audience loved. Additionally, the cameos by Brahmanandam and Ram Gopal Varma brought an extra layer of enjoyment to the film.
Q: Vyjayanthi Movies recently celebrated 50 years. How do you reflect on this journey?
