Ilaiyaraaja Case Shifted to Bombay High Court in Copyright Dispute
Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja has encountered another setback in his ongoing copyright dispute, months after his legal loss against Saregama. The latest development has once again brought his legal struggles into the spotlight.
According to reports, the Supreme Court of India has approved a petition filed by Sony Entertainment, allowing the transfer of Ilaiyaraaja’s case from the Madras High Court to the Bombay High Court. The move is aimed at streamlining legal proceedings and avoiding conflicting judgments.
The dispute dates back to 2022, when Sony Entertainment filed a copyright suit seeking to restrain Ilaiyaraaja from using or distributing music recordings associated with its label. Since then, the case has seen multiple developments.
Towards the end of last year, Ilaiyaraaja filed a counter-petition challenging Sony’s ownership claims over his compositions. He also sought the removal of the company’s title from his works, intensifying the legal battle.
With parallel cases being heard in different courts, the possibility of contradictory rulings became a concern. To address this, Sony Entertainment approached the Supreme Court requesting a transfer of the Madras High Court proceedings to Bombay, where its original case was already underway. The court agreed, emphasizing the need for a unified and consistent judgment.
While such procedural decisions are not uncommon, the case has sparked strong reactions. Some observers believe Ilaiyaraaja is facing mounting challenges due to multiple copyright disputes, while others feel the outcome will ultimately depend on how the arguments unfold in court.
The final verdict remains uncertain for now, but the upcoming hearings are expected to play a crucial role in determining whether Ilaiyaraaja or Sony Entertainment gains the upper hand in this high-profile legal battle.
