Grand Book Launch of Telangana Cine Prasthaanam Authored by Dr. Ponnam Ravichandra

The book launch and introduction ceremony of Telangana Cine Prasthaanam, authored by Dr. Ponnam Ravichandra, was held in a grand manner on Friday evening at the Hyderabad Film Nagar Cultural Center.

The event was presided over by G. V. Shyam Prasad Lal, IAS, Additional Collector of Nagarkurnool district. Renowned writer and Rajya Sabha Member K. V. Vijayendra Prasad attended as the Chief Guest, while filmmaker Venu Udugula was present as the Guest of Honour.

Prominent film journalist Prabhu, directors Allani Sridhar, cinema book writer S. V. Ramarao, and noted writer Ainampudi Srilakshmi participated as distinguished guests. The book was dedicated to eminent writer Mamidi Harikrishna.

Author’s Address

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ponnam Ravichandra said that he hails from Karimnagar district and has nurtured a deep interest in books and cinema since childhood. He recalled collecting numerous film magazines for his family-run bookstore and preserving newspaper clippings related to cinema. Through this process, he discovered the legacy of legendary actor Paidi Jairaj.

Using decades of meticulously collected film-related material, he earlier authored 80 Years of Telugu Cinema, which won the prestigious Nandi Award during the united Andhra Pradesh era. Expressing happiness over the release of Telangana Cine Prasthaanam, he said dedicating the book to Mamidi Harikrishna—whom he considers a mentor in film journalism—was deeply meaningful.

Dr. Ravichandra emphasized that even before the Telangana cinema discourse gained prominence, many actors and technicians from the region had made remarkable contributions to the film industry. He noted with pride that at least ten of today’s top Tollywood directors hail from Telangana.

Chief Guest’s Remarks

K. V. Vijayendra Prasad congratulated Dr. Ravichandra for undertaking such an important documentation of Telangana’s cinematic journey. He suggested efforts be made to reintroduce classic films to contemporary audiences. Highlighting Telangana’s rich artistic heritage, he urged that the talents of regional artists be showcased on a global platform. He also appealed to the government to improve basic facilities at Ravindra Bharathi, a symbol of Telugu cultural history.

Film journalist Prabhu praised the book as a significant contribution and said dedicating it to Mamidi Harikrishna was most appropriate. He stressed that cinema transcends regional divisions, adding that the industry always embraces talent regardless of geography.

Mamidi Harikrishna expressed gratitude for the honour, calling the book an invaluable source of information on Telangana cinema and recalling his long-standing association with the Ponnam family.

Filmmakers Venu Udugula, Allani Sridhar, and other guests lauded the book for its rich, well-researched content and for shedding light on several lesser-known yet important aspects of Telangana’s cinematic heritage.
