Under the passionate production of Ram Talluri and the skilled direction of Pradeep Maddali—renowned for the acclaimed Sarvam Shaktimayam Vikkatakavi marks the first-ever detective series set against a Telangana backdrop. In an exclusive reveal, director Pradeep Maddali sheds light on the making of this unique period thriller.
The Origin of Vikkatakavi
The journey of Vikkatakavi began with writer Teja Desraj, known for his work with director Prashanth Varma on films like Awe and Kalki. Teja’s compelling story idea received swift approval from ZEE5. When discussions around casting and directing were underway, Pradeep Maddali met with Teja and was captivated by the concept. Despite budget constraints, Pradeep accepted the challenge, marking the start of this ambitious project in collaboration with SRT Entertainments.
Crafting a Period Drama: A Unique Challenge
Bringing Vikkatakavi to life meant recreating the intricate world of the 1940s and 1970s. According to Pradeep, “Reproducing the look, feel, and mood of these eras—from sets and costumes to language and lighting—was exhilarating and complex.” This deep attention to detail ensured an authentic viewing experience, showcasing the grandeur of historical storytelling alongside thrilling, layered narratives.
Directing Under Pressure
Directing period content presents significant challenges, demanding precision across every department. Pradeep credits his strong, collaborative team for the seamless production. The synergy between the production designer, costume designer, and cinematographer was crucial in translating the vision onto the screen.
The Cinematographic Vision
Cinematographer Shoaib, despite his limited experience in feature projects but rich portfolio in over 300 Punjabi music videos, was selected to bring a fresh perspective. Pradeep’s decision raised some eyebrows, but his trust was rewarded. The visual aesthetic of *Vikkatakavi* also benefited from colorist Sanjeev, known for his textured work in Bengali cinema.
Extensive Set Design and Real Locations
To create the grandeur of Vikkatakavi, an elaborate palace set was constructed, with VFX employed minimally. Filming took place in iconic locations like Ramoji Film City (RFC) and the Aluminum Factory. Pradeep’s vision was to make RFC unrecognizable within the series, integrating it seamlessly into the storyline with the help of a skilled production design team.
The Inspiration Behind Amaragiri Estate
The fictional Amaragiri estate, central to the series, reflects the numerous princely states that existed pre-independence. The estate’s backstory adds depth, featuring a village destined to submerge following the completion of the Srisailam project—a plot element that heightens the intrigue.
Choosing the Title Vikkatakavi
Writer Teja selected the title as a nod to Tenali Ramakrishna, known as a “Vikatakavi”—a witty poet and covert spy in the Vijayanagara empire. The protagonist’s clever, Tenali-like attributes made this title a perfect fit.
Casting Naresh Agastya
Naresh Agastya’s selection as the lead came after several considerations. Pradeep recommended him based on his stellar performances in Senapathi and Mathu Vadalara. A successful look test convinced the team that Naresh would be ideal for the role, embodying the retro charm and intelligence essential for the character.
Character Insights
Naresh’s character exudes wit and strategic brilliance, reminiscent of Tenali Ramakrishna, and showcases a young detective from Hyderabad fluent in both Urdu and Telugu. Megha Akash takes on the role of the princess of Amaragiri—a modern-day psychiatric doctor—bringing both tradition and contemporary flair to her portrayal.
A Mystery Wrapped in History
The narrative of*Vikkatakavi unfolds with a mysterious event from the 1940s that resurfaces in the 1970s, interpreted by locals as a curse. The protagonist’s arrival triggers an investigation to uncover the truth behind these events, promising viewers a captivating experience.
Plans for Vikkatakavi Season 2
Fans will be excited to know that Season 2 is already in development, with writer Teja working on an expanded storyline to elevate the stakes and scale.
Musical Elements
Ajay Arasada composed the music for *Vikkatakavi*, infusing the background score with a vintage touch that complements the series’ historical themes. Ajay’s collaborative history with Pradeep dates back to 2016, adding a layer of trust and creativity to the project.
Supporting Cast and Upcoming Projects
The series boasts an ensemble cast, including Siju Menon as the king, Raghu Kunchi as an MLA, and significant roles by Mukhtar Khan, Tarak Ponnappa, Ramya Ramakrishna, Ashok Kumar, and Amit Tiwari. Looking ahead, Pradeep Maddali is also working on a new-age sci-fi horror story and an action thriller fantasy.
