Athadu Re-Release Confirmed for August 9
To celebrate the birthday of Superstar Mahesh Babu, the timeless Telugu classic Athadu is all set for a grand re-release on August 9, 2025. Directed by the wizard of words, Trivikram Srinivas, and produced by veteran actor-producer Murali Mohan under the Jayabheri Arts banner, the film originally released in 2005 and went on to achieve cult status.
Now, Athadu has been meticulously restored by Prasads Corporation in Super 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos sound, promising a nostalgic yet enhanced cinematic experience for a whole new generation of movie lovers.
At a press meet held ahead of the re-release, several key figures from the team were present—Murali Mohan, Priyanka Duggirala of Jayabheri Arts, Sai Prasad (Chairman of Prasads Group), Anvesh (MB Foundation), and Jithender Gundapaneni (Excell Arts).
Speaking on the occasion, Murali Mohan recalled,
“Athadu was originally released on August 10, 2005, and now it’s making a comeback on August 9, 2025, just ahead of Mahesh Babu garu’s birthday. With help from Prasads Group, we upgraded the film to meet today’s technology standards.“
He revealed that Trivikram had first approached them with the story of Athadu, despite being initially unavailable to direct for them.
“Though the lead character had grey shades, Trivikram convinced us that it would strike a chord with modern audiences. We gave him complete creative freedom. Mahesh Babu garu supported us by giving dates without hesitation. The climax was shot over 28 days on a massive set with cameras imported from the UK. While the theatrical run was only moderate financially, the film gained massive recognition and recovery through satellite rights.“
Murali Mohan added that audience demand over the last two years pushed them to go for the re-release.
“Priyanka took the lead and ensured this became a reality. Many fans missed watching it in theatres, and now they’ll get that chance. We’re planning to release it at Prasads PCX as well.“
Priyanka Duggirala explained the restoration process:
“The film was originally shot on physical reels. We scanned the negatives in 8K, restored them using advanced technology, and converted the output to Super 4K with Dolby Atmos for theatrical presentation. The first 15 minutes and the climax will be truly magical in theatres.“
Jithender Gundapaneni of Excell Arts remarked,
“It’s a privilege to bring back Athadu on Mahesh Babu garu’s birthday. We’re confident audiences will shower it with love once again.“
Anvesh, from MB Foundation, noted the technical upgrades visible in the new trailer and urged fans to experience the film on the big screen once again.
Exclusive Q&A With Murali Mohan
Q: Did the film become more profitable via satellite than in theatres?
Murali Mohan: Yes. The theatrical run was average, but we had no losses. Satellite and other rights brought us full recovery and goodwill. Even today, people recognize me as the producer of Athadu.
Q: Among Jayabheri’s 25 films, Athadu is still iconic. Did you expect that?
Murali Mohan: Not at the time. But it clearly stood out for its technical brilliance. Trivikram’s dialogues and direction elevated the film.
Q: Why didn’t you act in the film?
Murali Mohan (laughs): I wasn’t offered a role!
Q: Any chance of a sequel to Athadu?
Murali Mohan: If it ever happens, it will only be with Trivikram garu and Mahesh Babu garu.
Q: Some say re-releases clash with new films. Your thoughts?
Murali Mohan: Re-releases are rare and only happen occasionally. I support small films strongly. The real issue is high ticket prices, which keep middle-class families away. That’s why Athadu is being released mainly in multiplexes—for a premium, quality experience.
Q: How involved were you during the shoot?
Murali Mohan: We were involved but gave Trivikram garu complete freedom. We asked him to treat us like old-school producers while he brought in fresh thinking.
Q: Is it true Sobhan Babu garu was approached for Nasser garu’s role?
Murali Mohan: Yes. I sent the message through my staff, but Sobhan Babu garu called me personally and politely declined. He said he wanted to be remembered as a hero, not as a father figure.
Q: If you were to remake a film from your banner, which would it be?
Murali Mohan: O Thandri Theerpu. It still holds relevance. It was my first Nandi Award-winning film and an emotional milestone for us.
Q: There’s a rumor Pawan Kalyan garu was first considered for the lead. Is it true?
Murali Mohan: As far as I know, it’s just a rumor. We never approached him.
Q: Did Trivikram garu first approach you with Mahesh Babu or the story?
Murali Mohan: He narrated the story first. After hearing it, we all agreed Mahesh Babu garu was the best fit. His dedication during the shoot was commendable.
