Director Surender Reddy delivered hits with biggies like Ravi Teja and Allu Arjun. After his most recent period drama with Megastar Chiranjeevi, Surender Reddy teamed up with Akhil, a young actor who has been eyeing a proper hit for a long time for ‘Agent’ released on April 28 (Friday). Let us see how the movie fared.

Plot
Mahadev alias The Devil (Mammooty) is the head of the Research and Analysis Wing of the Indian government. He is on a mission to dethrone the international underworld don God (Dino Moreao) who leads a syndicate of politicians and businessmen parallel to the government and plans and massive attack on India. Meanwhile, Ramakrishna alias Ricky (Akhil Akkineni), an ethical hacker and a spy aspirant admires Mahadev. He even has a portion of his hangout place dedicated to the photos of Mahadev. He falls in love with Vaidya (Sakshi Vaidya). After failing to crack interviews for RAW agent selection, Vicky draws the attention of Mahadev and earns his trust to join RAW. Ricky also makes sacrifices to join RAW. The rest of the story is about how Mahadev and Akhil take on God, how is Mahadev and God connected and what made Akhil yearn to become a spy.

Analysis
Spy thrillers are not new to the Telugu audience. Agent is yet another film based on spy action thrillers and has been promoted as so. However, there are fewer spy elements and more action elements throughout the movie. In fact, the hero is recruited as a spy agent only for the reason that he has not one quality of a spy and that it could be used to camouflage his identity. Surender Reddy portrayed the hero as a trigger-happy person and justified his actions with a tragic incident in the flashback. Except for a couple of scenes the movie falls short of good moments and people with expectations of watching a true spy thriller will be disappointed. The background score and cinematography of the film are decent but the poor computer graphics are a letdown. Songs are a big disappointment and are wrongly placed against the flow of the story.
The entire story revolves around a spy agency chief and his team. Having more roles in a much wider premise could have made the movie more interesting.

Performances
Mammooty’s presence and acting have elevated the film to the next level. The entire story, written by Vakkantham Vamsi, stems from the character of Mammootty. He is also seen in action scenes in the film.
Akhil Akkineni’s efforts have paid off as far as his part is concerned. As an unruly youth who wants to wield guns and take on enemies, Akhil did well compared to his previous movies. His physique was impressive but the team could have worked more on his hairstyle which sometimes appeared similar to Vikram’s hairstyle in Aparichutudu. Dino Morea as a cool underworld don gave his best. Heroine Sakshi Vaidya, Murali Sharma, Sampath Raj and others were apt in their roles.
