Actor Sivaji Issues Heartfelt Apology Over Remarks at Dandora Pre-Release Event

Actor Sivaji Issues Heartfelt Apology Over Remarks at Dandora Pre-Release Event

Actor Sivaji addressed the media at a specially convened press meet following the controversy surrounding his remarks at the Dandora pre-release event. Speaking with visible emotion, Sivaji tendered a heartfelt apology, expressing deep regret for having used two inappropriate words on stage.

He admitted that the gravity of his mistake struck him immediately after stepping down from the stage and acknowledged that his choice of words was completely wrong.

“I Deeply Regret What I Said,” Says Sivaji

Speaking at the press meet, Sivaji said,
“I sincerely apologise to my fellow actors, actresses, and especially to women for the words I used that day. Those two words should never have slipped out. In my entire life, I have never spoken like this. I have been in public life for nearly 30 years, including my time in politics, and I have never crossed limits while speaking about women or any party. I don’t know why it happened that day, but it did—and I am deeply pained by it.”

He added that he immediately confessed his mistake to guests backstage and reiterated his unconditional apology.
“I stand by my statement without fear, but those two words were unquestionably unparliamentary. I say this with my hand on my heart—I am extremely sorry. What I said was wrong.”

Sleepless Nights and Introspection

Sivaji revealed that he had been unable to sleep for over 36 hours, constantly questioning himself about how such an incident could occur, especially when the producer had trusted him with the role.
“That inner turmoil is why I stayed away. However, since Dandora is releasing tomorrow (December 25), I felt it was my responsibility to come and support the film.”

Urging audiences to watch the film in nearby theatres, Sivaji spoke about Dandora’s theme, stating that it powerfully addresses caste oppression, social inequality, and resistance to love—issues that have plagued society for generations.
“People often say humans never change. Still, with the hope that change is possible, we made this film with honest intent and a strong story.”

A Film Rooted in Reality

Sivaji explained that Dandora is inspired by real-life incidents, set against a rural backdrop from the late 1990s to early 2000s. He praised the art directors for authentically recreating the period and thanked the director and producer for delivering a meaningful cinema that confronts caste hierarchies and social disparities head-on.

Clarifying His Intentions

Addressing the broader context, Sivaji referenced the teachings of respected cultural and spiritual speakers who have spoken about women’s dignity and societal values. He emphasised that public platforms demand responsibility and restraint.

Explaining what influenced his mindset, Sivaji said incidents involving actresses Nidhhi Agerwal and Samantha facing discomfort in public spaces had deeply affected him.
“Back when I entered the industry, the way actresses like Jayasudha garu, Vijayashanti garu, and Ramya Krishnan garu dressed became fashion trends. I have never told anyone how to dress or behave. My intention was to defend cinema, not to insult anyone. Even today, I can’t believe those words came out of my mouth.”

He shared that he first apologised to his wife, who questioned the appropriateness of his words, and expressed concern for how such controversies could impact their children. Sivaji also spoke about how complaints were filed with various bodies without anyone seeking his clarification, except for Supriya, to whom he personally apologised and who understood his remorse.

“There Is a Line on Stage—And I Crossed It”

“We all use casual language in private conversations, but on stage, there must be decorum. I have never misbehaved with any woman in my career. Even today, I address my colleagues with respect. I know that mistakes like this eventually come back to haunt you.”

Accepting responsibility, Sivaji said he would comply with the Women’s Commission’s request to appear on December 27 and submit a written apology.
“I have no shame in apologising when I am wrong.”
